Subtle or Statement?

Brief/ CAN YOU BRAND OUR BIBS, MAYBE THROW THE LOGO ON IT, YEAH?

STORY/ This is what happens when you find a designer (moi) who comes from a marketing background, who understands the creative potential of what-the-fuck they’re doing and knows the power of what a post, #repost, #regram, tweet, #retweet, share, reshare, like and comment can do for one's business.
A designer who can deliver beyond the scope of the original brief. Here’s a tip: Hire a designer who can think outside the box, willing to take risks and can execute more than just the aesthetics of the design.

There’s a big difference between make it pretty and make it work.

The client for years purchased bibs, like zillions of them, to protect their rib devouring, carnivore loving customers from a basting sauce disaster. One day, a light bulb suggestion was made by a customer...”Hey, have you ever thought about branding your bibs?” Nope was the answer. Too busy was the afterthought...and it didn’t go anywhere for a while.

Then the penny dropped…

Client Calls: “Hey can you brand our bibs?”
Moi: Sure. What are you thinking?
Client: “Don’t know, how about our logo and two handprints?”
Moi: Hmmm…ok. Let me have a think...

So think I did. And after lots of thinking I thought what if I created something that was less brand, in fact, no brand at all and just witty and funny. What if it was unique to Hurricanes and what if it made people laugh and want to take photos and share on social media? Just design for fun. So I kept thinking until I had about 10 quotes in the bag before I showed the client. The client liked the idea, they picked three and it was off to the races.

*AFTERTHOUGHT/ The # idea didn’t come until the very end. You see, the Hurricane’s brand is shared between the two founders running two independently owned and managed Hurricanes businesses. I thought, well if they’re going to take a photo, I’ll need a #location to set the founders restaurants apart. I didn't know if it would take off or not, and at the end of the day, it didn’t really matter. Because customers were having fun. The “post” is a bonus. Everyday the bibs get digital air time, they get eyeballs, likes, comments and shares. So remember, always think outside the box, always be open to people and ideas. Got it? Cool. Now, go make it happen.
