Client: Kakadu Tourism/ Nourlangie Kakadu National Park

Brief/ CREATE UNIQUE VISUAL STORIES WE CAN SHOW THE WORLD.

Story/ Originally the client had a 3-5 day plan to cover the entire brief, however, after a few phone calls, emails and more calls to discuss the reality and scope of the project, we agreed on a timeline and a budget which covered a new three week photoshoot (which stretched out to eventually a four week shoot due to waiting for access to some areas of the park) allowing contingencies such as weather, crew, tour availability, and the scouting and recruitment of “target market” people being around, being willing, being prepared to sign an image-release, and being available to participate in numerous photoshoot stories. I was based in Jabiru and Cooinda, travelling daily to locations, multiple sunrises, sunsets, stars, etc. as I worked through the shot list.

Being responsible for “street casting” all target market photoshoot talent, I had daily challenges of tours and crew being available but talent not, and vice versa. I eventually managed to shoot everyone the client had requested, completing their brief requirement - Youth Market x 6 people - incl. targeted 2 x Chinese Youth, Family of 4 (mum, dad, two kids), Senior Travellers x 4 (experienced retired couples x 2), staff x 12 in various stories ranging from “backpackers” to “working holidaymakers”, to “guests” at the hotels, to “tourists” to “adventurers” on tour. All up over 30 people were recruited for Kakadu visual stories. This included special permission to include and photograph several Kakadu Traditional Owners for specific stories, requiring respect, cultural awareness and humility.

What I learnt...patience.

For a shoot this size (4 weeks), you have to apply discipline and consistency. Everyday. And you need to take your chances. You can’t control the weather, or access, or people availability. You need to do whatever it takes, and if that means driving from Jabiru to Darwin (608.8kms return trip) to cast people, collect clothing, props and stuff for a shoot the next morning, you just do it. If it means getting up at 5am morning after morning to see if this sunrise will be the “one” to turn the sky on fire, you just do it. If it means waiting patiently while being eaten by mosquitos for the right moment to take “that” shot, well, you suck it up…and just do it - I mean lets man up here, it’s a mosquito, not a crocodile.

But first…coffee.
